SOUNDBITE (English), Evelyn REGNER, Chair FEMM Committee, In some areas, you have more than 90 percent of the staff dealing with the sick people. So in the hospitals, sitting at the cashiers of the supermarket ,dealing with the elderly,yeah, who are women. So women are really the heroes, protagonists of this crisis. And women, therefore deserve better pay. They deserve pay transparency. They deserve that they are really leading in political and also in companies. So we really need to transfer this real life leadership of women, into one that is appreciated, well paid and seen. So a lot to do. And of course, women are exposed to very much the labour market. Unemployment is dramatically rising with those precarious jobs where women are. And therefore also here we need a full gender mainstreaming of all those financial means the European Union is right now pumping into the national economies. So we need gender equality to be applied in the National Action Plans.

SOUNDBITE (English), Evelyn REGNER (S&amp;D, AT), FEMM Chair, The time has come to make this recovery a chance to advance women's rights. As we seek to rebuild our economies and our societies in a different way. This change must seek to preserve and advance women's rights, including their economic independence, work life balance, labour market participation, equal pay and representation, as well as sexual and reproductive health and rights.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), David SASSOLI, EP President, A pandemic does offer major opportunities. An opportunity to rethink what we want to achieve, i.e. building. A fairer society. And we won't have a digital transition or a green transition if we don't have more gender equity. And that's why in the negotiations on the MFF, we insisted that gender parity and the gender dimension should be a central priority in the seven year budget of the European Union

OUNDBITE (Italian), David SASSOLI, EP President, It's our duty to ensure that violence against women becomes a crime, a crime that should be punished wherever it occurs anywhere in the European Union. We therefore need to commit ourselves to ensuring that all the member states of the European Union ratify the Istanbul convention and this isn't an abstract issue. It has an effect on what we are, what we want to be.

Who are not with us today, Dr Aslam Turetzky, Professor Sarah Gilbert, Dr Chris here, Corbitt. Some of. You may have never heard their names before, but we owe them a lot. They are. Three scientists from Germany, the UK and the US, and these three extraordinary women lead the teams that developed the first three vaccines against.

SOUNDBITE (English), Ursula VON DER LEYEN, President of the EC, This year, we will propose new legislation to fight violence against women. This has become even more urgent because of the lockdown. Living free from fear from violence is a basic human right, and we must ensure adequate protection for all women in all European countries, online and offline, and especially at home. Second, women must be at the centre of the recovery. This is a clear requirement for all national recovery plans.

SOUNDBITE (Greek), Katerina SAKELLAROPOULOU, President of Greece, Domestic violence with its numerous different dimensions has taken on proportions which didn't exist in the past. The Metoo movement in Greece now has grown considerably under these circumstances, and it has given an opportunity to empower women to speak finally open, open in an open fashion about their terrible experiences.
