Members of the European Parliament's Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) looks into how artificial intelligence (A.I.) technologies affect culture, education and audio-visual sectors. MEPs are likely to ask for a general framework to regulate algorithms that recommend content, for example to manage their impact on cultural diversity. But we also have to keep in mind the risks that are coming together with these new technologies, especially when it comes to education. There are not all the sectors in education have a risk for the use of artificial intelligence, but everywhere where you have personal data of students, there might be a good to follow the approach of the Commission to analyse how high risk is for a special use or not, and not in general to say education is at high risk because you have also points where you can just use it for the benefit of pupils everywhere where you don't need personal data.

<a></a>SOUNDBITE (English), Sabine VERHEYEN (EPP, DE), Rapporteur, For the cultural sector we raised also some questions.There is a big chance for saving our cultural heritage, but it's also many questions are coming up when it comes to copyright, to who belongs, to whom the data belongs. That is the basis for new works made with artificial intelligence. And what is always in our position is that artificial intelligence in its use must be centred to the human being and not the other way around.

And I think we have to give also guidelines to protect our cultural diversity and also language. Diversity is very important, but especially also artificial intelligence can be used for this. For example, when it comes to translations, when it comes to making available cultural content to people from different groups, language groups, cultural groups we have in Europe. It is a big chance also to use artificial intelligence to make cultural content more accessible. But it is also important, like you already said, not to have a concentration of the most popular content, but also to keep an eye on niche and diverse content and diverse cultural approach

You also have the possibility to create new artwork, for example, on the basis of the data of all the works of Rembrandt. We already have this in the past that there was created a new Rembrandt or not a new Rembrandt, a picture in Rembrandt style. But it is with the same way how to to use the pencil and all these things so you can not just copy, but to create new works on the basis of known data.
