Statement by Martin SCHULZ, EP President, following the Nice attack

SOUNDBITE (German), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, Our feelings are with the victims and the families of the victims. And the injured people, we hope that they will recover rapidly. This is a terrible day, a terrible moment and it is visible that France which is a country with an open mind society with his laicistic tradition, is a goal in the focus of the terrorists is not surprised. As it was the case with the terrrorist attacks in Paris during the last two weeks or in brussels, they are a target in France. But we all are affected because the open mind society based on tolerance and respect - mutual respect - and defending our fondamental democratic values. This is axactly the opposit of what the terrorists want to impose on other people : their philosophy : there is only one style of life. this is not acceptable
