SOUNDBITE (English), Stephen HUGHES (S&amp;D, UK), on the PSE worries about the speed in which debt is going to be driven down, specially because of the determination of Mr Sarkozy and Ms Merkel by driven it down very quickly (...) 'that's too fast, that would be a catastrophe, that would lead widespread double depth recession throughout the EU; we think there is a more human way to do this, we want growth, intelligent economic growth, socially responsible growth to get us out from this recession...

SOUNDBITE (English), Stephen HUGHES (S&amp;D, UK), We are in a minority at this moment, but maybe what happened at the European Parliament it is an indication of what can happen, we led the negotiations with the Liberals and the EPP groups, the Greens.. and we got resolutions on both economic governance and Europe 2020 strategy that very much reflect what I already said, we want to go in a different direction... We have to put this message forward and at the end we will win

SOUNDBITE (English), Stephen HUGHES (S&amp;D, UK), I think the Council seems determined to renationalise whatever it can, that's a big mistake; we need more Europe right now, we need a Europe method with stronger mechanisms and tools that it has at the moment.
