MEPs debate on droughts and extreme weather events as a threat to local communities and EU agriculture in times of climate change. Droughts and extreme weather events pose significant threats to local communities and EU agriculture amid climate change. Increasingly frequent and severe droughts are straining water resources, impacting crop yields, and threatening food security across Europe. Extreme weather events, such as heatwaves and heavy rainfall, further exacerbate these challenges by causing crop failures, soil erosion, and damage to infrastructure. Addressing these issues is essential not only for protecting the livelihoods of communities dependent on farming and rural economies but also for safeguarding agricultural productivity.

MEPs debate the position of the Parliament for negotiations with EU countries on EU rules on new genomic techniques to make our food system more sustainable and resilient.

Plants obtained by certain genomic techniques and their food and feed: MEPs debate (Part 2)

MEPs vote on the following subjects: Setting up of four interparliamentary delegations; Foodstuffs for human consumption: amending certain 'Breakfast' Directives; Fees and charges payable to the European Medicines Agency; Recognition of professional qualifications: nurses responsible for general care trained in Romania; Authorisation addressed to France to negotiate a bilateral agreement with Algeria on matters related to judicial cooperation in civil and commercial matters; Authorisation addressed to France to negotiate a bilateral agreement with Algeria on matters related to judicial cooperation concerning family law matters; Partial renewal of Members of the Court of Auditors; EC/Kiribati Fisheries Partnership Agreement (2023-2028); Minimum requirements on minimum breaks and daily and weekly rest periods in the occasional passenger transport sector; and other topics.

MEPs debate on the report by the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee to reduce the use of chemical plant protection products and to make them safer by at least 50%; they would also reduce the use of so-called “more hazardous products” by 65%, compared to the 2013-2017 average.

Sustainable use of plant protection products: MEPs debate

Key debate - Nature restoration: MEPs debate (part 3)

MEPs debate on a new law obliging companies to ensure products sold in the EU do not come from deforested land anywhere in the world. The new regulation, already agreed with the EU member states, helps fight climate change and biodiversity loss by preventing deforestation related to EU consumption of products from cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm-oil, soya, wood, rubber, charcoal and printed paper.
