LUX Prize 2012: interviews of the 3 candidates Bence Fliegauf for "Just The Wind", Andrea Serge for "Shung Li and The Poet" and Miguel Gomes for "Tabu"

SOUNDBITE (English), Miguel GOMES, film director, How come there is this second part in Africa in a colonial timing in a farm of a Portuguese colony. I think we started the first part our days in Lisbon and that kind of mood we see in the first part of the film, has something to do with the feeling of loss and this thing was lost maybe, people can say it, it is the Portuguese colonial empire. I think it is the "youth" of these characters, I think that these characters they feel that their youth is gone. And thet is what they are really missing. This film is aout memory and time.

SOUNDBITE (English), Miguel GOMES, film director, I thought that the only way Murnau shot the film, which means stock which is now more unusual, because most of the films of our days are not filmed on film, they are done digitally. And not in black and white like cinema was then at that moment, I thought it was the only honest way to do the film.

SOUNDBITE (English), Miguel GOMES, film director, I'm happy to be here, it is an honour, I think it is important for the European Parliament in a time where we are talking about solidarity and things like this. Even if it is not so effective sometimes, these bonds between this European culture solidarity. I think it is nice to show the film to the deputies, maybe they can also learn someting with these films, because we are all learning something in our lives.

SOUNDBITE (English), Bence FLIEGAUF, film director, The message was simple; I wanted to feel the audience sympathy for the Romanian people and mostly for those Roma people who had been attacked during these incidents

SOUNDBITE (English), Bence FLIEGAUF, film director, She is very though and what is very common that there are no real fathers and husbands anymore, because the husbands and the fathers are in jail, or in mental institutes or they already left the family or they just immigrated to other countries. So basically, the mother has to be one who is the head of the family, this is not something they should do or they wanted to fo, this is something they must do.

SOUNDBITE (English), Bence FLIEGAUF, film director, I hope it is going to provocate some dialogue in society, actually that was my goal to create some kind of symbolic place to meditate on this issue.

SOUNDBITE (English), Bence FLIEGAUF, film director, These hree films are beautiful so it is an honour for me to be here and I also have to tell you that I realy appreciate when an award is coming from out of the business.

SOUNDBITE (French), Marco PAOLINI, producer, The story of this film: Lii is a young, very lonely woman, even in her community, but there is also this older man, who is lonely as she is. These two solitutes can connect with each other. Thisis not really a love story in a traditionnal way, there is no sexual relation, but there is a profound comprehension between these two lonely charcters, this common understanding leads the way to natural feelings.

SOUNDBITE (English), Marco PAOLINI, producer, When we decided to make the film we started to get in relation with people of this town. We worked with non-professional actors that mixed well with the actors the rehearsals and training allowed working well together. I think that the city is also a sort of important character in the film because it is true that this place is as far away as China can be, of the rest of the usual landscapes and big cities lifestyles which are even near by, it is reallu a wordl apart.

SOUNDBITE (English), Marco PAOLINI, producer, For us the Lux Prize represents an enormous opportunity, because we had only a very limited distribution. Well done, and so we achieved up to 100.000 viewers in the cinemas in France nd italy. That is not bad at all, but with the Lux Prize we have a concrete possibility to have the screening of our film in all European capitals.
