Not so long ago, millions of Europeans lived through times when they could not vote or even speak up freely. When their very lives could be in danger simply for being different, for holding different beliefs or for wanting a different life. Democracy is a precious gift passed on to us from previous generations. They aspired towards it and fought for it. Now it is up to us to maintain it, to make it stronger and pass it on to the generations to come. A wide range of malicious uses have been identified, including fraud, extortion and political disinformation. The impacts of such misuse can be financial, psychological and reputational. While the technology itself is legal, some malicious uses are not, and a combination of legal and technical measures may be mobilised to limit their production and dissemination.

The video game ecosystem has become a leading cultural and creative industry all over the world. It has an estimated European market size of EUR 23.3 billion in 2021, and it encompasses more than 4 900 game studios and 200 game publishers, with great potential for growth, innovation, creativity and triggering positive change for the whole sector.

Video games have proven to be a powerful cross-sectoral medium, successfully inspiring and drawing on many other creative and cultural industries, such as films and books. According to the Interactive Software Federation of Europe, half of all Europeans consider themselves to be video game players, of whom almost half are women, and the average age of a video game player in Europe is 31.3 years. Over 70 % of young people aged 6-24 in the EU play video games, although the majority of players are over 18.

On January 2023,&nbsp;Parliament called for gamers to be better protected from addiction and other manipulative practices, while emphasising the potential of this innovative sector.

The European Parliament commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day to honor the victims and reflect on the lessons of the past. Established in 1995, this annual event coincides with the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on 27 January 1945. This year, the Parliament highlights the story of Hungarian-born cellist Pál Hermann, who was murdered in the Holocaust. His Gagliano cello, saved from the Nazis and rediscovered decades later, symbolizes resilience and the enduring power of art. The ceremony includes a speech by Hermann’s daughter, Corrie Hermann, and a performance of his music by cellist Sam Lucas. Through remembrance and education, the European Parliament reaffirms its commitment to fighting anti-Semitism, promoting tolerance, and ensuring such atrocities are never repeated.
