Humanitarian crisis in Iraq and Syria caused by IS violence: extracts from the debate

SOUNDBITE (English), Christos STYLIANIDES, on behalf of High Rep. of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President EC , "Pulling together all EU instruments, humanitarian aid, relief, longer term stabilisation.To that end the Commission is taking its responsibility . It agreed 1 billion Euro package for Syria and Iraq for this year and the next year."

SOUNDBITE (German), Elmar BROK (EPP, DE), "We need to try and ensure that people in Teheran and elsewhere who are Muslims do something , react. There are partners, Turkey. We need to try and find some kind of alliance to put a stop to this sect . I don't believe that the coalition partners alone can manage this. We need the neighbours from Qatar, Iran , Turkey, everyone has to be part of this coalition to put a stop to what DAESH is doing out there."

SOUNDBITE (Romanian), Victor BO&#350;TINARU (S&amp;D, RO), "We need to think beyond the cliches and prejudices.  regional and local players are very important and we need to meet the needs of these people who are in a desperate situation. We also need a strategy for post conflict development in the region"

SOUNDBITE (English), Charles TANNOCK (ECR, UK), " the three main target priorities in my mind for the coalition  must be to destroy IS money raising facilities such as oil installations and destroy their ammunition and their training camps. Of the  More than 3000 European fighters, sadly 500 come from my country, the UK. The UK is a major military power so it must do more for my country to step up the efforts and along with all the EU states adopt an uncompromising approach towards EU citizens who have gone abroad to join ISIS and other militant Jihadi groups."

SOUNDBITE (English), Marietje SCHAAKE (ALDE, NL), "If we believe as I do that it is in our interest to take action and that domestic and foreign threats are increasingly blurred we must work not only on EU increased efforts but also with partners notably in the Middle East to end the horrors of IS and end the humanitarian suffering."
