European Parliamentary Week 2018 - European Semester Conference Interparliamentary Conference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the European Union: extracts from the opening statements

SOUNDBITE (English), Antonio TAJANI, EP President, We must find ways to increase citizen&rsquo;s trust and confidence in our union and its institutions. We must deliver a new vision for the future of Europe and propose concrete action that this EU delivers in the coming ears for the benefit of all Europeans.

SOUNDBITE (English), Tsveta Karayancheva, President of the National Assembly of the Republic, We need to about how Brexit is going to affect policies of the EU and the multiannual financial framework. This is going to have its affect all over the European Union and one of the major priorities of the Bulgarian Presidency is the reduction of economic and social differences among and within member states.

SOUNDBITE (English), Valdis DOMBROVSKIS, Vice-President of the EC in charge of the Euro and Social Dialogue, We also note important progress in the member states initially had very high rates of non-performing loans or were lacking in reforms. We will continue to work as members states and next month we will present proposals on how to reduce non-performing loans and to prevent their accumulation in the future. This will also enable progress in parallel on creating a common back-stop for a single resolution fund already agreed in principle in 2013 and a European deposit insurance scheme.

SOUNDBITE (English), Valdis DOMBROVSKIS, Vice-President of the EC in charge of the Euro and Social Dialogue, First we proposed to set up Euro fiscal stabilisation function which we see aimed at maintaining investment levels in the event of large asymmetric shocks. Such a stabilisation function will provide the possibility to activate resources rapidly from member state to compliment the role of National budgets. Investment is often cut first from the National budget in times of strain, with detrimental effects of longer term productivity and growth. The support will from different sources of funding at EU level mainly loans. This will make these ideas more concrete in a legislative proposal to come together with the post 2020 multiannual financial framework.
