SOUNDBITE (German), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, We have again spoken about the fact that we had spoken together directly on the morning of the 'putsch', we have spoken on the phone very intensively. I have called my colleague KILI&Ccedil;DAROĞLU, midden in this dramatic process, we have exchanged our news and it brought me in the position to a direct view of what had happenend here.

SOUNDBITE (German), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, We have intensively exchanged views on 3 topics: on this putsch temptation, on the unity of the Turkish people, which was a impressive unity of coureagous men and women which have stand up without weappons against a quite brutal group of military. I think that was a moment on which the Turkish people can be rightly proud and also deserve international recognition for that.

SOUNDBITE (German), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, I have learned in this discussion that those people who had been on the streets had been coming from all political camps and from all groups of the society. That is a real movement of the people that was carried by all parts of the society, all levels of education, all levels of social living standards and through all the different voter groups. It had been really the people who stopped the military.

SOUNDBITE (German), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, Finally, we had agreed on the fact that Turkey and the EU had been standing once much closer as it is today the case. We have discussed very openly the reasons for this distance, often with some quite differing views, but in the core question we agreed on the necessity to discuss openly about these different positions to develop by this openess the common ground that brings us closer.
