SOUNDBITE (English), Monica MACOVEI (ECR, RO), rapporteur, <a></a>We lowered the age of the children who must have their fingerprints taken from 14 to 6. The reason is that they could also be used by terrorist so we want to protect them. They could get lost or used by for traffic and it would be easier to track them and to reunite them with their families. So it will allow the protection of the children.

SOUNDBITE (English), Monica MACOVEI (ECR, RO), If each state don&rsquo;t fill the database Eurodac with information no one can use it, it would be empty, so useless. But after the terrorist attacks -unfourtanetly people need to die for others to wake up, they started to fill in thousand times more each database including Eurodac. I want to say that this concerns not only fingerprints but also facial recognition with biometric data which involves two things - fingerprints and facial image.

SOUNDBITE (English), Monica MACOVEI (ECR, RO), Europol had access to Eurodac database but only through a national gate which was in Netherlands and it was very difficult because they have very high standards of security so they couldn&rsquo;t use it. What we did now was to give Europol direct access to Eurodac. Europol is the agency that fights also illegal migration, terrorism and other serious crimes. So the regulation we adopted today gives direct access.  

SOUNDBITE (English), Monica MACOVEI (ECR, RO), Now we go into the trialog, with the Council and the Commission as a facilitator, then we go to the plenary and then it will implemented. A regulation enters into force after adoption. So, in two weeks after it is published in the Official Monitor. It doesn&rsquo;t have to be transposed into the national legislation.
