SOUNDBITE (English), Kri&#353;j&#257;nis KARI&#325;&#352; (EPP, LV), The EPP does not object to the nomination of Ms Van Brempt as the Chair of this Committee. However I want to make it very clear that the EPP will do its utmost to prevent this Committee from becoming what could be termed as a 'witch hunt' either against industry or against diesel technologies where Europe has a competitive advantage in the world.

SOUNDBITE (English), Kathleen VAN BREMPT (S&amp;D, BE), Chair of the EMIS Committee, The reason why this Committee is implemented is of course the fact that it has been discovered that defeat devices are used in cars in Europe and elsewhere. What we are going to investigate is how it was possible that this was discovered in the States and not by the competent authorities in Europe. Second important question, since ten years we have the Euro 5 and Euro 6 regulation that also says that we need to have real driving testing in place, but since then nothing has happened. There is a problem with implementation and enforcing of European environment law and we will very closely collect data, research on that to make sure we have a good insight on what happened so we can look to the future.

SOUNDBITE (English), Kathleen VAN BREMPT (S&amp;D, BE), Chair of the EMIS Committee, It's absolutely not the reason why we have installed this inquiry committee, to have a 'witch hunt' towards some people in the Commission or national authorities, or with regards to the industry; but it is not in the interest of industry either that European law is not implemented and enforced. So this is not a witch hunt, this is an investigation into the implementation and enforcement of European law.
