Preparation of the G20 summit in Hamburg of 7 and 8 July 2017: extracts from the debate

SOUNDBITE (English), Matti MAASIKAS, Estonian Deputy Minister for EU Affairs, We tend to focus on our migration crisis in our part of the world, But migration is not a European phenomenon nor is managing solely a European responsibility. It is rather a global responsibility requiring collective solutions in respect for our obligations under international law.

SOUNDBITE (English), Frans TIMMERMANS, First Vice-President of the EC in charge of Better Regulation, Inter-Institutional Relations, the Rule of Law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, We cannot leave Italy alone with this everybody should do their parts (applause) We have shown in the past if we stick together and find solutions that everybody shares, we can find results. Surely, the situation in Greece is not where we wanted to be. Yet, there is still a lot to do but if you look back at 2015 and you look at the situation now much has also improved. There is an incredible level of solidarity with refugees and migrants in Greece and in Italy, but the rest of Europe cannot just count on the solidarity of the people in Greece and Italy, because the people there also have their limits. We need to show that the rest of Europe understands this and does their part in helping solve this crisis (applause)

SOUNDBITE (English), Jeppe KOFOD (S&amp;D, DK), When it comes to globalisation and free and unregulated market has to some extent failed us. It has worked extremely well for multinational cooperation&rsquo;s and already very wealthy individuals but far too many ordinary workers like the steel workers in France and/or the UK, or slaughter house worker in Denmark and Germany to take example. Globalisation has also brought unfair competition in negative ways, pressure, job insecurity and in many cases unemployment. So, at the same time enormous wealth has been created but it has not yet been fairly shared it&rsquo;s clear.

SOUNDBITE (English), Sophia IN&apos;T VELD (ALDE, NL), The Estonian presidency is absolutely right in saying that migration management is a global responsibility, and therefore it is to be welcomed that the Germany presidency wants to put this firmly on the agenda of the G20. Making it a global issue at the same time, it is also European responsibility and as the commissioner said out very clearly member states are not living up to their responsibility, they are abandoning Italy they are abandoning Greece.

SOUNDBITE (German), Bernd LANGE (S&amp;D, DE), In the face of behaviour from a series of countries which is saying my country first or should I say my America first. We should respond to them, people first. We need global governance in the interest of people around the world, and to do that we need global structures.

SOUNDBITE (German), Sven GIEGOLD (Greens/EFA, DE), There is something between the global world trade order and the financial world order that we have now, and Trump style protectionism. Between that you have social and ecological rules for globalisation allowing the opening of markets and the EU, can only say that the time has arrived not simply to go on with business as usual. In the free trade agenda or bilateral treaties as designed ether to and as we have drafted with Japan rather, we need treaties that harness the opportunity of the hour to bring in social and ecological rules which can be implemented as part of the standards in which they are in shrined.
