Sakharov Prize 2018: Oleg Sentsov, a political prisoner

The filmmaker Oleg Sentsov was sentenced in Russia to 20 years in prison for “plotting terrorist acts”. His trial was described as unfair by international organisations. The European Parliament awarded him the 2018 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. On hunger strike for 145 days, he has become a symbol of the struggle for the release of political prisoners held in Russia and around the world.
