SOUNDBITE - Astrid LULLING (EPP, LU), Rapporteur, in French: The progress of this directive does respect the principle of Subsidiarity because it leaves the choice up to member states to organise social protection of spouses in compliance with national legislation

SOUNDBITE - Astrid LULLING (EPP, LU), Rapporteur, in French: We can come up with European directives which meets the interests of the citizens in the area of social security and that help us to reduce distortions in the single market.

SOUNDBITE - G&uuml;nther OETTINGER, Commissioner, in English: Our proposal sends a strong signal that we cannot stand by while women are fall into poverty through a lack of social protection. It also takes a big step forward in terms of promoting female entrepreneurship.

SOUNDBITE - Anna ZABORSKA (EPP, SK), in Slovakian: Children need mothers more in the first months of their lives and that applies to children born in France, Germany, Slovakia and anywhere. I hope that the newly adopted directive on maternity leave will extent maternity leave for all working women without discrimination.

SOUNDBITE - Rovana PLUMB (S&amp;D, RO), in Romanian: I believe it is important to find ways to help mothers to reintegrate in the businesses environment, thus contributing to supporting their own families, the protection of cultural, economical and social rights, the improvement of family life, these are all fundamental objectives that must be promoted by means of this new directive.

SOUNDBITE - Antonyia PARVANOVA (ALDE, BG), in Bulgarian: With this directives the member states will provide equal social rights, 14 week maternity leave for self-employed women whereas for assisting spouses and recognised partners, the amendment of the directive is a modern, constructive decisions that will allow the self employed women to benefit from the same social security in all countries.

SOUNDBITE - Ra&uuml;l Romeva i Rueda (Greens/EFA, ES), in Spanish: It is worrying that some member states are being so difficult in ensuring that we have the same quality of treatment and lack of discrimination across the whole of Europe... We see this as well with another directives (...) This should make us think, we cannot call on Subsidiarity when we are talking about such a fundamental issue in terms of EU citizen's rights.
