EPRS - Combating gender-based violence at EU level

Description

Violence against women is a problem that can affect anyone, anywhere in the world, including in the EU. As women disproportionately experience violence from family members or relatives, at home, violence against women tends to stay hidden. The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated this problem. The EU does not have a specific legal instrument to address gender-based physical or cyber violence, despite the harm and costs it imparts on victims, their friends, family and society. EPRS assessment finds that a combination of policy options would generate the greatest European added value, promote victims' fundamental rights, address the impact on individuals, society and the economy, and support law enforcement and people working with victims.
