In 2015, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President François Hollande urged European countries to share the responsibility of hosting asylum seekers.
 
The EU was dealing with an unprecedented migration wave that year, with hundreds of thousands of people entering the EU through irregular channels, many fleeing war in Syria. Most of them headed to Germany and a handful of other countries.
 
During a historic joint address to the European Parliament, Merkel and Hollande called for joint action to tackle the root causes of the crisis.
