For Serge Haroche, European research  cannot afford to rest on its laurels.

Europe has played an historic role  and continues to play a key role

in the sectors of research, innovation  and creativity.

The particular challenge posed  by the extremely rapid development

of South East Asian countries  must be met by Europe.

Our goal is to spend 3 per cent of the GDP,

but unfortunately we are still far  from that in the European Union.

I am also responsible for working on Korea  at the moment.

so its economic growth  is the highest in the world.

MEPs would like to see the budget  allocated to research doubled.

But this desire may be hampered  by EU budgetary restrictions.
