What are the  key messages from Parliament's interim President and the political groups with the first plenary showdown just around the corner?

Time for work after group wrangling

led by acting President,  Gianni Pittella,

visit Italy on the eve of its assumption  of the EU’s rotating presidency.

We have offered the Italian government  the Parliament's full collaboration

to ensure the presidency  is fruitful, successful,

in areas such as the creation  of employment opportunities,

and the EU's role Europe  in facing global challenges.

Back in Brussels his boss,  the head of the Socialists

and his EPP counterpart, Manfred Weber,  were brainstorming on future directions.

In recent years, we have been the party  that has brought about EU-wide reforms

in countries where difficult decisions  had to be taken

and we want to continue this  in the future.

The lesson from the crisis is:  no more amassing big debts.

I think that what we have seen today,  are the contradictions in the parties

which propagate nationalism,  such as the National Front.

These contradictions surface  and become visible

when they go beyond their nationalist  borders and do politics at international level.

This week, we learned that Marine Le Pen's  French National Front

That leaves Nigel Farage’s  anti-EU group in a stronger position.

But the reality is MEPs on the centre  hold the majority and will call the shots.

I think a lot people  did not want to be associated

with what they perceived  to be real extremism

and I think that’s where the failure  of the Front National has come from.

I think most people  who have formed groups

now have to work very hard  on the cohesion which is necessary.

We have an exciting opportunity  in this Parliament as Greens.

We’ve got positive proposals  for how to make Europe work better

for Europe's citizens, particularly  on challenging corporate power

and making sure the people's wishes  are actually paramount.

All eyes will be on the parliament  when it meets on 1 July

for the first session of the new term,  and on the willingness and capacity

of MEPs to fulfil the promises  they have made.
