SOUNDBITE (English), Mary HONEYBALL (S&amp;D, UK), Rapporteur, There is gender-based violence all the way, often there's domestic violence before the women set out, then there's violence en route, often from the traffickers or the smugglers or the people who are actually carrying them, or indeed other passengers in the boat. So when they arrive at a safe European country, they have already been through very traumatic experiences. So I think we have a duty to not only take them in, but also help them recover from their experiences.

SOUNDBITE (English), Mary HONEYBALL (S&amp;D, UK), Rapporteur, But what we are recommending is that Member States really look at their reception facilities and make sure that they really are gender-sensitive. So that there are things like health initiatives, separate sanitation for men and women, that there's child care so that when women have interviews concerning their refugee status they don't necessarily have to have their children with them, because sometimes they want to talk about things that they don't wan't their children to hear. We also want a female interviewer and interpreter, so that the women are treated as best as they possibly can.

SOUNDBITE (English), Mary HONEYBALL (S&amp;D, UK), Rapporteur, I think that where awareness is raised, other passengers and the authorities that may be involved will be more attuned to it and more able to take action against what is happening to the women.

SOUNDBITE (English), Mary HONEYBALL (S&amp;D, UK), Rapporteur, Well we did talk to the NGOs involved, really to quite a lot of them, and also to the United Nations, UNHCR. I myself will be going on a European Parliament delegation to Munich in a couple of weeks time, to look at the reception facilities there, and I've obviously talked colleagues in the parliament about what's happening in their own Member States.
