<p>Nicolas Schmit, born on 10 December 1953 in Differdange, is a Luxembourgish politician. He has been serving as Member of the European Parliament since 2019.</p>

<p>After the hearing by the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL) of the European Parliament, the committee prepares an evaluation letter on the candidate. Parliament is expected to vote on the new Commission as a whole on 23 October.</p>

The FEMM Committee organises a Public Hearing entitled “Enhancing gender equality through common European action on care". The hearing examines gender aspects of provision of care, especially with regard to uneven distribution of care responsibilities in formal and informal care, but also the overrepresentation of women in the care sector, the challenges related to this at EU level including the consequences on the gender pay and gender pension gaps and on the work-life balance and the possible added value of common European action on care. Different speakers present their experiences, analysis and suggestions. Parliament debates on proposals for improving the social and economic situation of artists and cultural workers, who are among those hardest-hit by the pandemic. MEPs are set to call for a common European status for artists, a common framework for working conditions and pan-European minimum social standards for artists and cultural workers.
