At the initiative of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, the European Parliament holds a High-Level Conference on the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Conference will bring together representatives from international and regional human rights organisations, members of national parliaments of EU member states, international and local civil society organisations, Nobel Peace Prize laureates, young voices from around the world as well as MEPs and chairs of Parliament’s committees to address human rights challenges. At this year’s youth seminar, invitees from European Parliament Ambassador schools (EPAS) from the 27 Member States and the United Kingdom, together with the group Alumni de l’Académie Notre Europe, were able to listen to inspiring stories from representatives of this year’s laureate, the brave Ukrainian people, and engage in the discussion together with Vice-President Heidi Hautala of the European Parliament. With the participation of Heidi Hautala, Vice-President of the European Parliament, Ivan Fedorov, elected mayor of Melitopol, Oleksandra Matviychuk, human rights lawyer, chairwoman of the Center for Civil Liberties NGO, and Yaroslav Bozhko, the Yellow Ribbon Civil Resistance Movement. On the 14th December 2022, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of thought is awarded to the "brave people of Ukraine". A ceremony takes place in the European Parliament, in Strasbourg. After the ceremony, Roberta METSOLA, EP President and Sakharov prize laureates hold a press conference.

On the 14th December 2022, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of thought is awarded to the "brave people of Ukraine". A ceremony takes place in the European Parliament, in Strasbourg. The brave Ukrainian people are awarded the European Parliament’s 2022 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in a ceremony, in Strasbourg. Some representatives of the Ukrainian people gathered physically in Strasbourg. Statement by Oleksandra MATVIYCHUK, Human rights lawyer and Chair of the Center for Civil Liberties, who gives an update on the current situation in Ukraine and tells about the role of her NGO since the beginning of the war, which documentes the war crimes in Ukraine. She also thanks the European Parliament for awarding the brave people of Ukraine with the Sakharov Prize and explains that it sends a strong message of unity.
