The European Climate Law instructs the Commission to propose an EU climate target for 2040 at the latest within six months of the first global stocktake carried out under the Paris Agreement that took place at the COP28 in December 2023. Plenary debates proposals for setting the EU 2040 climate target, shortly after the Commission publishes a Communication and an impact assessment to initiate the process of setting a 2040 climate target. Framework for ensuring a secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials: MEPs debate part 1

MEPs debate on Parliament’s demands for the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), taking place in Dubai from 30 November. The Parliament calls for action in view of the COP28, which takes stock of the progress made on implementing the 2015 Paris Agreement. MEPs want global financial contributions to be continued and increased, better efforts to protect, conserve and restore biodiversity and global targets to triple renewable energy and double energy efficiency by 2030. They also call for an end to all direct and indirect fossil fuel subsidies.

UN Climate Change Conference 2023 in Dubai (COP28): MEPs debate

The Parliament debate on a new legislation to increase the use of renewable energy in line with the EU’s Green Deal and REPowerEU initiatives. The directive, already informally agreed with the Council, is intended to raise the share of renewables in the EU’s final energy consumption to 42.5% by 2030. Member states are urged to aim for 45%. The new law will also speed up the approval process for new renewable energy power plants, such as solar and wind farms, as well as the adaptation of existing ones.

Renewable energy directive: MEPs debate

MEPs debate the EU’s international commitments and the risks of compromising the EU’s green transition. The European Green Deal was presented by the EC in 2019. Its purpose is to transform the EU into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy, ensuring zero net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, economic growth decoupled from resource consumption, and with no one and nowhere left behind. Parliament debates the risks of compromising the EU’s green transition and the EU’s international commitments including those under the Paris Agreement on climate change and the UN Biodiversity Agreement, the latter of which seeks to protect 30% of the earth’s lands, oceans, coastal areas and inland waters. MEPs debate on the Fit for 55 package. The new law on new energy saving targets requires an 11.7% reduction in primary and final energy consumption by 2030 (relative to 2020 projections). Every year until 2030, 1.5% of energy savings must be made, starting at 1.3% until 2025 and increasing to 1.9% by the end of 2030. MEPs debate (part 1)
