Cada 5 de junio celebramos el Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente. En sus cincuenta años de existencia, este evento se ha convertido en una de las mayores plataformas a nivel global para concienciar sobre el medio ambiente. Este año celebramos su 50.º aniversario. Decenas de millones de personas participan en el evento, junto con Gobiernos, empresas, ciudades y estructuras comunitarias. En esta ocasión, el país anfitrión es Costa de Marfil en colaboración con los Países Bajos; y el tema central, las soluciones para combatir la contaminación por plásticos, con la campaña #BeatPlasticPollution.

5. júna oslavujeme Svetový deň životného prostredia. Za uplynulých päť desaťročí sa tento deň stal jednou z najväčších celosvetových platforiem na šírenie osvety o životnom prostredí. V roku 2023 sa Svetový deň životného prostredia koná už po päťdesiatykrát. Zapájajú sa do neho desiatky miliónov ľudí – spolu s vládami, podnikmi, mestami či komunitnými organizáciami. Jeho tohtoročným hostiteľom je Pobrežie Slonoviny v partnerstve s Holandskom. Obe krajiny sa spoločne prostredníctvom kampane #BeatPlasticPollution zamerajú na riešenia na boj proti znečisťovaniu plastami.

In March 2019, European Parliament approved a new law banning single-use plastic items such as plates, cutlery, straws and cotton buds sticks. On 3 July 2021, the ban of certain single-use plastic products enters into force. Frederique RIES (Renew, BE), rapporteur in 2019 of the EP Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) gives a statement on the different measures becoming law.

Up to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic enters the oceans each year. About three quarters of the marine litter in the world's seas is plastic. As from the 3rd of July 2021, according to the legislation adopted by the European Parliament in 2019, single use plastic items such as straws or plastic plates will be forbidden.
