As part of the 'fit for 55' package, the Regulation setting CO2 emission performance standards for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (vans) raise the contribution of the road transport sector to the EU's climate targets, the proposal sets more ambitious 2030 targets for reducing the CO2 emissions of new cars and vans and allows only zero-emission vehicles from 2035. In the European Parliament, the proposal has been referred to the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), with Jan Huitema (Renew, the Netherlands) as rapporteur. The Parliament adopted its position during the June I 2022 plenary session, and the Council adopted its general approach on 29 June 2022. Then the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission starts a trilogue.

Fit for 55 - CO2 emissions for cars and vans trilogue: arrivals, roundtable and atmosphere shots

MEPs votes on eight draft laws aimed at combatting climate change and protecting European jobs and citizens. Plenary rejects the report on the Emissions Trading System including for aviation. MEPs decides to send back to Committee the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and the Social Climate Fund. MEPs adopts the reports on CO2 emissions reductions for new cars, land use and forestry and effort sharing.

Fit for 55: extracts from the voting sessions

MEPs debate and vote on key EU draft laws to combat climate change by drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to protect jobs and citizens. Parliament is set to adopt its position on eight proposals that are part of the “Fit for 55 in 2030 package”. This is the EU’s plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and have net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (climate neutrality) by 2050, in line with the European Climate Law.
