Every five years EU citizens choose who represents them in the European Parliament, the directly-elected institution that defends their interests in the EU decision-making process. The next European elections will take place in 2024.

The elections take place every five years and are the largest transnational elections in the world. By voting in the European elections, people living in the EU get to choose the 705 members that will represent them in the European Parliament until 2029. Following the elections, Parliament votes to elect the new head of the European Commission, which is the EU’s executive body, and to approve the full team of commissioners.

European elections 2024

On 24 February 2022,&nbsp;Russia&nbsp;began a&nbsp;military invasion&nbsp;of Ukraine, in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict that had begun in 2014. Shortly before, on 21 February, Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized&nbsp;two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine&nbsp;as independent.&nbsp;On 1&nbsp;March&nbsp;the European Parliament held an extraordinary plenary session in Brussels to assess Russia’s military assault on Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Speaker of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada (parliament) Ruslan Stefanchuk spoke live from Kiev.&nbsp;

The European Parliament President Roberta Metsola was in Kyiv on 1 April&nbsp;to express the European Union´s support of&nbsp;the Ukrainian people and to condemn the unjustified Russian attack. She travelled on the invitation of the Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk.

Since the beginning of the invasion, the EU has adopted several&nbsp;packages of restrictive measures to Russia’s unprecedented and unprovoked military attack against Ukraine. The measures are designed to weaken the Kremlin’s ability to finance the war and impose clear economic and political costs on Russia’s political elite responsible for the invasion.&nbsp;

Following a debate on 4 May, MEPs will vote on Thursday 19 May on a resolution about the social and economic consequences of Russia’s war in Ukraine and the EU’s response. The same day, they will also discuss energy security and the recent cuts to gas supply to Poland and Bulgaria.
Also this week, the Transport and Tourism Committee will debate with Ukraine’s Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov on the latest situation in the country concerning transport infrastructure, recovery needs and EU support.

Russian aggression against Ukraine

On 12 and 13 may, the EP is holding the first meeting of the EU - United Kingdom Parliamentary Partnership Assembly, composed of 35 members each from the EP and the UK parliament. TThe meeting will be opened by EP President Roberta Metsola, House of Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle (TBC) and Lord Speaker Lord McFall of Alcluith (TBC). EU-UK cooperation on the war in Ukraine and energy are among the topics to be discussed.

EU-UK relations are changed&nbsp;following Brexit and the deal reached at the end of 2020. The United Kingdom (UK) left the European Union (EU) on 31 January 2020, after 47 years of EU membership. The UK has lost all the rights and benefits it had as an EU Member State and is no longer a part of the EU’s Single Market and Customs Union.

The EU-UK withdrawal agreement in force since 1 February 2020, ensured that the UK’s withdrawal from the EU happened in an orderly manner, and protects the rights of EU citizens and UK nationals, the EU’s financial interests, and peace and stability on the island of Ireland.

The EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and the UK sets out preferential arrangements in areas such as trade in goods and in services, digital trade, intellectual property, public procurement, aviation and road transport, energy, fisheries, social security coordination, law enforcement and judicial cooperation in criminal matters, thematic cooperation and participation in Union programmes.&nbsp; In April 2021 the European Parliament voted with a large majority in favour of granting also its consent to the agreement. In the resolution Parliament strongly welcomed the conclusion of the&nbsp;Agreement that limits the negative consequences of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, which it considers a “historic mistake” as no third country can enjoy the same benefits as an EU member.

The withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union has had implications for access to the resources in the maritime space traditionally used by fishing vessels of both Parties. The Withdrawal Agreement and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement laid down the rules that will be in effect until at least 30 June 2026. However, the initial months of application of these rules revealed a number of outstanding points and issues that have not yet been fully resolved. In this context, EP debated&nbsp;on 4 April an initiative report on the Future of fisheries in the Channel, North Sea, Irish Sea and Atlantic Ocean,

EU - UK relations

On Europe Day, the Presidents of the European Parliament, Commission and Council received the final report with proposals to reform the EU. During a closing ceremony  in Strasbourg, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, on behalf of the Council Presidency, President Emmanuel Macron, and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen received from the Co-Chairs of the Conference Executive Board the final report on the outcome of the Conference.
This one-year journey of discussion, debate and collaboration between citizens and politicians culminated in a report centred around 49 proposals that include concrete objectives and more than 320 measures for the EU institutions to follow up on under nine topics: climate change and the environment; health; a stronger economy, social justice and jobs; EU in the world; values and rights, rule of law, security; digital transformation; European democracy; migration; education, culture, youth and sport. The proposals are based on recommendations made by citizens who met within the European Citizens’ Panels, National Citizens’ Panels and contributed their ideas on the Multilingual Digital Platform.

President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said: "Citizens - especially young people - are at the heart of our vision for the future of Europe. They have directly shaped the outcome of the Conference. We are at a defining moment of European integration and no suggestion for change should be off-limits. We should not be afraid to unleash the power of Europe to change people’s lives for the better."

Europe Day is celebrated on or around 9 May every year to commemorate a speech by French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, on 9 May 1950 which led to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community the following year and became the forerunner of the European Union of today. In the context of Europe Day on May 9, the EU institutions are hosting a wide range of online and on-site activities at their locations. The European Parliament participates, with his buildings in Strasbourg welcoming citizens.

Roberta METSOLA is in Estonia for an official visit. She starts the visit with meeting with Jüri Ratas, the speaker of the Parliament in a cage of the old town, followed by a visit in the school Tallinna Südalinna Kool, where the President has an exchange of views with students and finally the visit to he e-Hub which was developped at the beginning of the 1990 During the afternoon, the President will meet with Kaja Kallas, the Prime Minister and with Alar Karis, the president of the republic and finally she participates in a discusion at the Lennart Meri Centre.

The Special Committee on Foreign Interference (INGE 2) holds it constitutive session to elect its chair and four vice-chairs. The committee is tasked with screening existing and planned EU legislation for loopholes that could be exploited by non-EU countries for malicious purposes.
