With a population of around 150 million, there are more pigs than any other livestock category in the EU! The sector is supported by the Common Agricultural Policy, but it is facing serious challenges… Its negative impact on the environment, concerns about animal health and an uncertain international context need to be addressed if the sector is to become more sustainable in the future and match the EU’s green ambitions.

The Familly farm "Ferme de la Croix" in Villers-le-Bouillet / Fize-Fontaine is Established in the village for 5 generations cultivating the land and raising livestock. They try to adapt the agricultural practices to environmental challenges and animal welfare. They also diversified their production, opening their own butcher shop on the farm and producing artisanal pasta. 33 000 people die in Europe every year from untreated infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This number could increase tenfold by 2050. By then, antibiotic resistance will surpass cancer as the second biggest cause of death worldwide. Without working antibiotics, we could return to a “pre-antibiotic era”, where infections from surgeries or cancer treatments, and even simple infections would no longer be possible to treat.Bacteria become resistant to antibiotics when we use the wrong antibiotic or abuse antibiotics to treat an infection. We can acquire antibiotic-resistant bacteria from eating meat from animals treated with antibiotics or by being exposed to contaminated water. Antibiotic resistance also impacts livestock, agriculture and food production, causing a serious economic burden that costs the EU €1.5 billion per year... EPRS - Fighting antibiotic resistance

Parliament updates the civil protection mechanism to improve how the EU responds to disasters. Members voted for road accident victims to receive fair compensation, and for people outside the Eurozone to pay lower charges on cross-border payments. Parliament wants to keep investing in under-developed regions and also calls for livestock to be transported in better conditions.

In northern Italy, a farm produces organic rice in a nature area and the goal is to let the nature do its job. This biodiversity brings lots of different kind of birds, plants, insect, and fishes. The farm also built an organic digester to create their own biogas used as fertilizers in the fields. In Sweden, a farm produces fertilizers and bio fuel for tractors and trucks. In Ireland, a farmer produces winter barley, wheat and oats. He uses new technologies to manage the spreading of fertilizers in his fields. In Czech Republic, a farm produces hops on about 42 hectares. In Spain, the research center Cicytex provides services of high added value to companies in the sector of Agro-Food Technology. The Community of irrigators Genil –Cabra have participated in an EU-funded Research programme on sustainable use of irrigation water in the Mediterranean region.

In Germany, a family farm produces about 1700 organic eggs per day.
