Maybe you work on one of the almost five-and-a-half million farms that produce a combined harvest of 300 million tonnes of cereals each year? As a central ingredient in many staples such as bread and pasta, cereals are our most important source of food.

This is what Europe does for cereal farmers

In circumstances that are sensitive politically, economically, socially and with regard to safety, relations between the EU and Niger are mainly expressed through development cooperation.

Niger is facing many challenges, both in terms of development and in terms of security and humanitarian areas. The country is at the bottom of the ranking of the Human Development Index of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), despite progress in terms of economic growth and social development recorded in recent years. The food security situation is structurally fragile, due to poor harvests linked to droughts and recurrent floods and because of precarious conditions in which live large segments of the Nigerian society.

2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the EU’s common agricultural policy (CAP). This infoclip illustrates examples of modern agriculture in three different farms in Belgium, Poland and Spain. A Familly farm in Villers-le-Bouillet, Belgium, cultivating the land and raising livestock, a family farm cultivating grain in Minaya, in the region of Guadajara, Spain and a familly farm in Poland close to Tarnow, specialised in Soja.

They try to adapt the agricultural practices to environmental challenges and animal welfare. They also diversified their production, opening their own butcher shop on the farm and producing artisanal pasta. Even though all EU countries have some practice of minimum wage, in most member states this remuneration often does not cover all living costs. Over recent years and in the context of the economic and social crisis engendered by the Covid-19 outbreak, the creation of a European minimum wage is increasingly considered as a useful instrument to ensure fair wages and social inclusion.
