The LUX Audience Film Award is presented every year by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, in partnership with the European Commission and Europa Cinemas. A symbol of the European Parliament’s commitment to culture, the Lux award continues to build cultural bridges across Europe, by putting the spotlight on films that go to the heart of the European public debate.

The award aims to strengthen ties between politics and citizens, by inviting European audiences to become active protagonists and cast their vote for their favourite films.

“The Teachers’ Lounge” by German director Ilker Çatak won the 2024 LUX European Audience Film Award, in a ceremony in Parliament’s hemicycle in Brussels.

The film, produced in Germany, tells a story about Carla, a young high school teacher, distinguished from her colleagues by her idealism. When a series of unsolved thefts sour the atmosphere among the teaching staff, Carla decides to investigate. With the help of a hidden camera and to everyone’s surprise, she exposes the thief but her revelation unleashes forces that slide steadily out of control and presents Carla with an unsolvable dilemma.

The five films shortlisted for the 2024 LUX European Audience film award were&nbsp;unveiled at the Venice film festival on Friday 1st of September.&nbsp; 20 000 Species of Bees, Fallen Leaves, On the Adamant, Smoke Sauna Sisterhood and The Teachers’ Lounge&nbsp;competed for the 2024 LUX Audience Award.

It is a tool to support European cinema, to spark debate on current political and social issues and also a way to reflect on European identity and values. 

The ten films nominated for the Lux Prize are every year announced at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in July. This year the three films in competition for the LUX Prize are: Styx by Wolfgang Fischer (Germany/Austria), The Other Side of Everything by Mila Turajlić (Serbia/France/Qatar) and Woman at War by Benedikt Erlingsson (Iceland/France/Ukraine).

Lux Prize 2016

President Roberta Metsola awarded the 2022 LUX European Audience Film Award to “Quo vadis, Aida?” by Bosnian director Jasmila Žbanić, during a ceremony on 8 of June in Strasbourg. "This film is a strong call for justice for the women and mothers of Srebrenica who witnessed the atrocious killing of over 8,000 loved ones. Such horrendous atrocities and such a crime against humanity must never be forgotten,” said President Metsola at the ceremony, which took place in the Strasbourg hemicycle.
The winner of the LUX Audience Award – jointly awarded by Parliament and the European Film Academy, in partnership with the European Commission and the Europa Cinemas network – is selected jointly by MEPs and a European audience (each accounting for 50% of the final decision).
The three nominated films were announced on 11 December 2021 at the European Film Awards. These were: “Flee” by Danish director Jonas Poher Rasmussen. “Great Freedom” by Austrian director Sebastian Meise, “Quo vadis Aida?” by Bosnian director Jasmila Žbanić.

Close” by Belgian director Lukas Dhont won the 2023 LUX European Audience Film Award on Tuesday, in a ceremony in the European Parliament’s hemicycle in Brussels. The film, co-produced by Belgium, France and Netherlands, tells the story of an intense friendship between two thirteen-year old boys Leo and Remi. When their friendship is suddenly disrupted, Leo approaches Sophie, Remi’s mother, struggling to understand what has happened. “Close” is a film about friendship and responsibility.

The other four films shortlisted for the award were:&nbsp;“Alcarràs”&nbsp;by Spanish director Carla Simón,&nbsp;“Burning Days”&nbsp;by Turkish director Emin Alper,&nbsp;“Will-o'-the-Wisp”&nbsp;by Portugese director João Pedro Rodrigues and&nbsp;“Triangle of Sadness”&nbsp;by Swedish director Ruben Östlund.

"Cold case Hammarskjöld", "The realm", and "God exists, her name Is Petrunya" are very different films, but they have some things in common: they are European and their stories make us think about politics, values, traditions and they challenge our preconceptions.

MEPs choose the winning film. The winner will be announced during the award ceremony on 27 November during the plenary session in Strasbourg.

Our free film screening at the Neue Filmbühne in Bonn took place on January 9 and 10, 2024. Afterwards, there was the opportunity to discuss the film "Falling Leaves" and the European cinema landscape. Admission was free.

The five nominated films have been announced during the Venice film festival for the LUX Audience Award 2024: "20 000 Species of Bees" by Spanish director Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren, "Fallen Leaves" by Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki, "On the Adamant" by French director Nicolas Philibert, "Smoke Sauna Sisterhood" by Estonian director Anna Hints, "The Teachers' Lounge", directed by Ilker Çatak and produced in Germany. The audience and the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are invited to rate the films online. The film that receives the highest overall ranking from the public and the MEPs, with each group being weighted at 50%, will be the winner of the LUX Audience Award. The winner will be announced at the LUX Audience Award Ceremony, which will take place in the European Parliament in March 2024.

‘Close’ by Belgian filmmaker Lukas Dhont has won the 2023 LUX Audience award.  
  
The coming-of-age drama chronicles the unraveling of a close friendship between two 13-year-old boys.   
  
Drawing inspiration from his own youth, Dhont examines the way society discourages young men from engaging with their emotions and forming close relationships with their peers.  
  
Organised by the European Parliament, the LUX Audience Award promotes cultural diversity, raises awareness about current political and social issues and provides support to European cinema.
