The Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) vote a legislative proposal aiming to alleviate water scarcity, in the context of adapting to climate change, by increasing the uptake of water reuse for agricultural irrigation in the European Parliament in Brussels. Parliament votes on new rules to protect consumers across the EU, and to alleviate water scarcity and reclaim water. Changes to a motor insurance directive safeguard the rights of victims of motor accidents. Members vote on a plan to make products and services more accessible to people with disabilities, and vote on a free trade deal with Singapore that would eliminate the majority of tariffs.

Consumer protection and accessibility: Coming up in Brussels

During the plenary session (22-25/10/2018) of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, MEPs debate and vote on plans to improve consumers’ trust in drinking water from the tap by tightening the maximum limits for certain pollutants. They also propose setting up free water fountains where feasible and providing tap water for free, or for a low service fee, in restaurants, canteens and catering services. Statements by Michel DANTIN (EPP, FR), Rapporteur, and Karmenu VELLA, Member of the EC in charge of Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.The results are: 300 in favor, 98 against and 274 abstention. During the EP plenary session (15-18 January 2018) in Strasbourg, MEPs vote common EU rules on how, where and when one can fish in the EU. The new law would provide for common measures on fishing gear and methods and allowed species for all EU waters. It would also add some bite to Commission proposals to allow innovative methods, such as electric trawl pulse fishing (used to drive fish up out of the seabed and into the net), to be used across the EU. Ramón Luis VALCÁRCEL SISO (EPP, ES), EP Vice-President, opens the vote. The results are: 399 votes in favour, 189 against and 86 abstentions. The proposal is sent back to the Committee for inter-institutional negotiations.

To bake quality bread, one of the key ingredients is moisture. Researchers have developed innovative ultrasonic humidification technology. Flour, yeast, water and salt. If the recipe is simple, the process is more complex than it seems, especially in the key stage of fermentation. Once shaped, the dough rises in rooms where temperature and humidity are closely controlled.Here in Nantes, this semi-industrial bakery is testing an innovative technology where moisture is produced thanks to ultrasound.

The farm also built an organic digester to create their own biogas used as fertilizers in the fields. In Sweden, a farm produces fertilizers and bio fuel for tractors and trucks. In Ireland, a farmer produces winter barley, wheat and oats. He uses new technologies to manage the spreading of fertilizers in his fields. In Czech Republic, a farm produces hops on about 42 hectares. In Spain, the research center Cicytex provides services of high added value to companies in the sector of Agro-Food Technology. The Community of irrigators Genil –Cabra have participated in an EU-funded Research programme on sustainable use of irrigation water in the Mediterranean region.
