Formal hearings of commissioners-designate were introduced as a result of the Maastricht Treaty. The first Commission to be subject to this new procedure was the Santer Commission in 1995. Anita GRADIN, Commissioner-designate for Immigration, Justice & Home Affairs, Financial Control, Anti-fraud and Relations with the European Ombudsman, appears before the parliamentary committee in his prospective fields of responsibility.
