Recording of the Sakharov Prize 1989 Award ceremony for Alexander Dubček After the 1989 revolution in Czechoslovakia, Dubček was elected chair of the federal assembly from 1989 to 1992. Addressing the European Parliament in January 1990 as he received his Sakharov Prize, Dubček noted that "even during the most difficult moments of their history, the nations which make up my country have never ceased to feel that they are part of humanity's great struggle for freedom' and from the Prague Spring to the Velvet Revolution, 'the ideals of freedom, sovereignty and social justice remained alive".
