Euro MPs debate the outgoing Hungarian EU presidency and what they want from Poland, plus GMOs, road safety and - maybe - economic governance.

At the last plenary session  before the summer

MEPs discuss the outgoing  Hungarian EU Presidency,

and what they want  from the incoming Poles.

I'm quite pleased to see the back  of the Hungarian Presidency.

We have huge challenges now  with the Polish Presidency.

But remember we were told  there'd be a permanent Council

and the six-month presidencies  wouldn't matter.

Over 60% of Europeans view genetically  modified organisms, GMOs, negatively.

MEPs are likely to support moves  that will allow each country

If the majority in, for example,  Austria or Hungary, oppose GMOs,

we should allow those countries  not to plant them.

A plan to halve EU road deaths in the  decade to 2010 failed to reach its target.

Now the aim is to achieve  a similar reduction by 2020,

but the Council blocked moves to punish  traffic offences in a driver's own country.

MEPs look set to back a compromise,  but it doesn't go as far as they wanted.

We have problems from a number  of incidents and accidents in my region

over the last few years  and people want action,

so I think that this particular position  is not very helpful.

Greek MPs' 'yes' to austerity  measures clears one hurdle

but the economic  governance issue remains.

If EU Finance Ministers fail  to agree on Sunday,

MEPs will vote on Tuesday  to trigger a second reading.

If they agree,  the vote moves to Wednesday

in the hope of securing a deal.  It will be a busy week.
