David SASSOLI, EP President, opens the plenary session (9-10 October 2019) of the European Parliament in Brussels. He makes a tribute to Jacques CHIRAC, former French President and former MEP. SOUNDBITE (French), David SASSOLI, EP President, With great emotion I was informed of the demise of Jacques Chirac, President of the French Republic, tied to his country and the city of Paris. He has also been a great European, MEP of the first hour, always standing for peace, tolerance and democracy, the essential values of Europe. All our sympathy goes to his family and to the French People. I would like European Parliament to pay a tribute to him.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), David SASSOLI, EP President, <p>I also would like to briefly remember the people who lost their life in the latest shipwreck off the shores of Lampedusa. It is the umpteenth shipwreck. I would like, and I am sure that you agree, not to talk anymore about deaths in the Mediterranean Sea, but I desire to discuss practical measures to end this dramatic situation.</p>  <p>I would like to be by the side of the German Police, of the German People and of the Jewish community in Germany. The German police confirmed that at least two people were killed today in Halle, one of the most important cities of Saxony, in the eastern part of the country, and that the killer is on the run. Situation is still not clear; our thoughts are with the families of the victims, their friends and the German citizens. For all these reasons, I invite you to observe a minute of silence.</p>
