António Correia de Campos on Presidents Barroso and Buzek: What does the future hold for the relationship of the Parliament and the Commission?

Time for a word with today’s guest,   Portuguese Socialist MEP,

António Correia de Campos.   I guess we’ve got to start

with President Buzek’s inaugural address.   What did you make of it?

The vast majority? Do you think so?   I sensed quite a lot of hostility.

When it comes to him,   the situation is different.

In technical terms,   President Barroso is very qualified,

he knows the issues very well,   and he knows the social actors.

He shows great virtuosity,   he can speak several languages fluently.

A communication problem   between him and part of the audience,

That’s a mystery, we have no idea   about what is going to happen.

The Parliament will, for the first time,   have new and very strong competences.

Therefore we don’t know yet   how the Parliament will manage...

But we are sure   that it is going to assert itself

because Mr Buzek’s speech   was a very powerful speech,

saying that the Parliament   will assume its responsibilities

I'd say that in the speech...   I would say yes.

It's not possible to disagree   with the economic revival policies.

Nevertheless, it is possible to be more   demanding when it comes to economy.

This is, recovery shouldn't be   more of the same old thing,

we should ask for changes   in the institutions.

but I think the EP will have   a very important role in that regard.
