SOUNDBITE (English), Beate GMINDER, European Commission, We have reached today an agreement that we will continue to finance with a substantial amount the protection of our borders in the European Union member states will receive money from the European Union to have equipment like helicopters or big boats to have staffing at the border and also to secure a visa enhancement between member states and third countries.

SOUNDBITE (English), Tanja FAJON (S&amp;D, SI), I am happy we reached a good compromise in the final political trilogue. What is important is that we will have almost good 6 billions euros available for better border management and visa policy, which is in a way more than double than the existing financial envelope. The parliament managed to secure additional billion euros for better border management. What was also important is that we will keep money for visa policy. We will treat and focus not only on better border management, but also on more humane treatment of people. So respect for fundamental values was also very important for the Parliament. I am happy with the political compromise we reached today and thanks to the German Presidency and the Commission, we managed to secure important elements for the Parliament.

There are some linguistic or cosmetic checks will have to do in the coming days, but I do expect having this agreement that the member states will endorse it early next year. That means also, including the Parliament, that the money will be available next summer so we can reach our goal still under the German Presidency.
