Since 2007, the European Parliamenthas had its own cinema prize.

Each year a panel of film expertsselects 10 European movies.

Their three favouritesare the Lux Prize finalists.

She came from the Eastto serve man and beast.

Immigration, social integration and povertyare the subjects that come up most often,

moving stories that arealmost always social and realistic.

Plenty of food for thoughtat a political level too.

This is authentic European cinema which isdifferent from the Hollywood blockbusters.

There's another difference, which is alsoa weakness of European cinema.

Less and less films actually travel.The borders have disappeared.

All Europeans go anywhereand movies don't any more.

The difficulty is to create a film that is ableto communicate in all different countries,

that is not limitedwithin its language border, for example.

in the 24 official languages of the Unionto the three finalist films,

a technical operationcosting over 3,000 euros per version.

It's a great advantagefor the hegemony of American cinema,

which can afford to systematically dubevery film into different languages.

First to Venice where the three finalistsare presented during the Mostra festival.

They're then shown in cinemasacross the 28 Member States

for the prize based on votingby the European public.

It means you get another chanceto promote the film all across Europe

and screen it in front of different audiences.

I think that's why I made the film.I made it in order to cross borders.

Then back to Brussels, where the EPopens its own cinema for a few weeks.

MEPs are invited to elect their favourite.

And at the end of each year the winnerof the Lux Prize is finally announced
