Teona Mitevska’s film ‘God Exists, Her Name is Petrunya’ has won the 2019 LUX Film Prize. The film examines what happens to a woman who throws herself – literally – into a man’s world. Set in Orthodox Christian Northern Macedonia, the film delves into themes of religion, women’s rights and the importance of tradition.

It is about a woman defying the system and winning.

An actual woman 5 years ago jumped for the cross,

caught the cross, and her life became impossible

because everybody said, "You are a woman,

When we heard this story, me and my sister,

to speak about everything that frustrates us

is something that any woman or man can identify with.

a young woman jumped in the water in Štip

and the priest gave her the cross without any problem.

This is due to the courage of this individual 5 years ago,

From next year, many more women will jump for the cross.
