Nuclear concerns reach the EP with a Finnish petition against a planned nuclear power plant and a Spanish NGO objecting to a radioactive waste disposal centre.

More than two months  after the Fukushima disaster

the nuclear debate arrives at  the EP’s Petitions Committee.

At issue is the construction  of a nuclear power plant in Finland.

According to the petitioners,  it could damage local wildlife.

They believe it's contrary to EU directives  and await a reaction from the MEPs.

We hope that they will give a sign to  the Finnish authorities and this firm,

maybe a letter or an announcement  that they are worried about this project.

was also present to defend its interests.

Political decisions pertinent to our project  have already been made at national level

So the debate here does not  threaten our project in any way.

After the debates the MEPs finally  decided to put the matter aside

We have to ascertain at which site  the power plant will be realised.

an association opposes the construction  of a centre for radioactive waste in Spain.

But here, the matter falls outside  the EU’s competence.

Rather than rejecting it  we're postponing the decision.

We'll be very attentive  so that when the request is made again,

we can check if it is  in compliance with EU directives.

Petitions to the EP can only report  a violation of EU legislation.
