SOUNDBITE (French), Antonio TAJANI, EP President, The European Parliament, representing European peoples and their values, can not forget Daphne and Jan Kuciak, murdered a few months after her. The European Parliament will continue to demand with all the force of the 500 million citizens' voice that justice be done. True justice, not only to material authors, but also to all instigators and accomplices. We ask for justice on behalf of the thousands of readers who paid their last respects to Daphne in the Rotonde church in Mosta. I&rsquo;ve stressed very clear : I will never stop to fight to discover why Daphne was killed. We know the killers names, but we want to know why she was killed.

SOUNDBITE (French), Antonio TAJANI, EP President, The murder of a journalist profoundly affects the rule of law. That is why, during the April plenary, we adopted a resolution to strengthen the protection of investigative journalists. We ask the European Commission for financial support for investigative journalism. We also want to protect journalists who are unfairly threatened with million-dollar lawsuits. We have therefore proposed a new European system to avoid any intimidation process.

SOUNDBITE (English), Matthew CARUANA GALIZIA, the son of assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, My mother is now beyond all and any harm and no longer needs anyone&rsquo;s protection. But, her memory continues to be targeted by powerful people who won&rsquo;t rest until her legacy has been completely destroyed. We can&rsquo;t let that happen. Her legacy, as you recognise today, was a gift to and belongs to society. It&rsquo;s a legacy that inspired many thousands of people in Malta, Europe and around the world to find their own voices, to demand more of themselves on a people who make the rules and to understand that we cannot improve the world only through good deeds, but that we must also find the courage to fight the immoral and the immoral within our societies.

SOUNDBITE (English), Matthew CARUANA GALIZIA, By extending this award to my mother&rsquo;s legacy, you protect it. In accepting this award on behalf of my mother, I also accept it on behalf of the handful of brave journalists in Malta who continue her work. On behalf of the civil society activists, who keep her memory alive, often at great personal risk. On behalf of the people who keep turning up at vigils and protest dedicated to my mother, even when everything seems so hopeless. On behalf of the journalists across the world that have retold her story many hundreds of times and yes, even on behalf of politicians in Europe and at home who have taken up my mother&rsquo;s cause.

SOUNDBITE (English), Matthew CARUANA GALIZIA, I won&rsquo;t name this people here, they are big enough targets as it is, but they have all helped protect my mother&rsquo;s memory and in doing so have become part of her legacy and have brought us closer to justice. Not criminal justice for her death perhaps, but another sort of justice, one that recognises her life&rsquo;s work as a contribution to all of us and her assassination as a crime against us all.
