During the plenary session of the European Parliament in Brussels, MEPs debate to set priorities ahead of EU-US summit. In a vote on Thursday MEPs will lay down their recommendations to the Council for the EU-US summit of 20 November.

SOUNDBITE (Dutch), Stefaan DE CLERCK, European Council, On Data protection: I have to say it is one of the key elements as further underpins European values (art 16 of the Treaty), that's why the presidency supports any initiative whose goal is to protect DATA and improve DATA protection in Transatlatic relations and provides an adequate level of Data protection.

SOUNDBITE (English), Karel DE GUCHT, European Commissionner for Trade, The economy and jobs will be at the heart of the Summit's discussion, we will start by reviewing relevant results of the G20 summit and discuss our respective contributions to sustainable and balanced economy, we alos want the summit to underline the need to conclude an ambitious , comprehensive, and balanced agreement in the WO on the Doha development agenda.

SOUNDBITE (English), Karel DE GUCHT, European Commissionner for Trade, We need to work closely on coordinating our efforts inrecipient countries so as to maximize the effectiveness and impact of our aid and avoid duplication of effort.

SOUNDBITE (English), Karel DE GUCHT, European Commissionner for Trade, EU and US must also work together in a more comprehensive way to tackle new threats to the global networks such as cyber attacks and cyber crime finally in the Foreign Policy arena we will stress our joint strategy and maximize on the groung; we must support the Midlle East peace process with the aim of achieving a framework for agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority within a year.

SOUNDBITE (English), Viviane REDING, European Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, So with your support I am determined to end this piecemary approach and to negotiate an umbrella agreement that first will provide for a coherent and harmonised set of Data protection standards and include essential principles, such as propotionality , data minimization, minimal retention periods and purpose limitation, second that is applican&acute;ble to all future and existing agreements dealing with information sharing follow anforcement purposes, third , that contains allnecessary Data protections standards in lin with the Union data's protection acquis such as enforcable rights of individuals, administrative and judicial redress or non discrimination laws, fourth, to ensure the effective applicationof data protection standards and their control by independent public authorities.
