The president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, awarded the 10th LUX Prize to Toni Erdmann, a father-daughter tragicomedy by German filmmaker Maren Ade.

Over the last 10 years the European Parliament’s LUX Prize

has given more visibility to film culture in Europe

and has made European film more popular with European citizens.

That’s why I'm very proud to be able to award the prize again this year.

The three films that have reached the final   this year

remind us that what unites us, as Europeans,

The three films represented here in the final show us

if we, above all, take care of   the people around us, too.

Toni Erdmann shows a father’s attempt to reestablish contact with his estranged daughter

 by creating, for those who saw the film,

- an absurd and deeply comical confrontation. 

By subtitling the shortlisted films in the 24   official languages of the EU,

the European Parliament is helping these remarkable films to be seen in all 28 member states,

to make them accessible and to reach cinema buffs around Europe. 

That would probably not have been possible without our support. 

I hope that we will continue this cultural mission that we started 10 years ago well into the future.
