SOUNDBITE (German), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, &ldquo;David Cameron has achieved a majority that he must be congratulated for. But it is a divided country, it stands before great challenges, its government. And it is clearly a great defeat for the Labour Party, which had clearly expected more, and the party must now have a think about why it didn&rsquo;t fully manage to mobilise the electorate. We also see that UKIP got over 12 percent, the party only got one seat, that&rsquo;s a result of the electoral law but it is a strong force in the country. And the Liberal Democrats, the traditionally pro-European party, suffered a heavy defeat, so I think it an election that puts us before great challenges.&rdquo;

SOUNDBITE (English), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, &ldquo;The Labour Party was strongly defeated, the party has to look to the reasons for this failure, also the LibDems (Liberal Democrats) traditionally pro-European, were strongly defeated, even humiliated. I think the country is in a difficult situation, this government will be challenged. Concerning now the next steps, we hope that David Cameron will make reasonable proposals, it is not up to us now to discuss about referendum questions. The questions have been raised by the Tories and must be answered by the Tories.&rdquo;

It is not up to us to discuss this, the questions have been raised by the Tories and must be answered by the Tories. I think that the United Kingdom as a fully integrated member of the EU makes the EU stronger, but I also believe that the EU makes the UK stronger. I hope that David Cameron will make reasonable proposals, and that debate in Great Britain will be led in a rational manner.&rdquo;
