MEPs debate on the escalation of the war and the humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan. Civil war broke out in Sudan in April 2023 after a brutal power struggle erupted between the Sudanese army and a powerful paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has so far claimed more than 150,000 lives, prompting a famine and claims of genocide in the Darfur region, located in the western part of the country. With the United Arab Emirates having been investigated by a United Nations panel over accusations that it is backing the RSF, there have also been growing calls to end European weapons exports to the Gulf country over fears they might be chanelled to Sudan.

MEPs debate on CAP. The proposed changes to current EU common agricultural policy (CAP) rules seek to relieve farmers of unnecessary and time-consuming administrative obligations. To cut the red tape still further and make the rules clearer, MEPs want more flexibility in how farms can apply the CAP’s environmental rules and propose to increase the maximum limits for support for small farmers. The amendments to the rules on the common organisation of markets in agricultural products (CMO) would strengthen farmers’ contractual position in the food supply chain and thus stabilise their income. In their report, MEPs clarify when agricultural products can be called “fair” or “equitable” and when to use the term “short supply chain” on labels or in advertising.

MEPs assess the latest developments in EU-US trade relations with Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and Danish Minister Marie Bjerre for the Council during the plenary session in Strasbourg. Council and Commission are seeking a negotiated solution with the US to restore stability and predictability in transatlantic trade relations, but has also prepared for potential countermeasures if no agreement is reached. Political group speakers quiz the Commission on its stance on respect for European values in Hungary in light of the government’s ban of the Budapest Pride march. During the debate, MEPs are set to demand that the Commission apply for interim measures as part of the ongoing trial, so that the Court of Justice of the EU can order the suspension of the legislation. They are also expected to point to the recent opinion of the EU Court of Justice’s Advocate General, who considers Hungary’s Child Protection Act incompatible with EU law.

MEPs, Council and Commission discuss risk of further instability in the Middle East following the Israel-Iran military escalation and the launch of a review of the agreement that forms the basis of EU-Israel political and economic cooperation. Israel's compliance with human rights and democratic principles is an essential element of the country’s association agreement with EU, enshrined in article two of the agreement. Reacting to Israel's blockade of humanitarian aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip, EU foreign policy chief Kaja KALLAS announced the launch of a review of article two of the agreement on 20 May 2025. This is the first step in a procedure that could eventually lead to the suspension of the agreement.

A unified EU response to unjustified US trade measures and global trade opportunities for the EU: MEPs debate (part 3)

European Parliament assesses the state of fundamental rights in Hungary after the pro-government majority changed the law on public assemblies in March 2025, enabling authorities to classify pro-LGBTIQ+ gatherings as violations of the Child Protection Act and consequently ban the Budapest Pride. MEPs are set to argue that this limitation of the rights of assembly and expression is a direct violation of the basic human and civil rights enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU and the core values of the Union. In 1997, Budapest became the first capital of a former Communist bloc country to host a Pride march, a landmark moment for equality and freedom. However, Hungary’s government has been taking regressive steps for many years, dismantling institutions, the rule of law, and freedom of expression, to the point where Parliament can no longer consider the country a full democracy.

In a debate on Thursday, MEPs and the Commission discuss plans for the future of the agri-food sector in the EU. The ‘Vision for Agriculture and Food’ was announced by Ursula von der Leyen in the political guidelines for her new Commission and adopted on 19 February 2025. The communication outlines planned initiatives to simplify and better target the EU common agricultural policy (CAP) to farmers who need support the most.
