The Environment and Public Health Committee adopt its position on the update of the EU Pharmaceutical Strategy. MEPs vote on a number of recommendations like establishing patient-centred health policies, supporting an innovative pharmaceutical industry. Other areas covered include and measures for more secure supply chains, sustainable medicines and crisis preparedness and response mechanisms.

Title: Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe

SOUNDBITE (English), Dolors MONTSERRAT (EPP, ES), Rapporteur, We achieve a balance text I think it's going to be the compass to orient the new pharmaceutical legislative in this new decade. In the same time, it's the cornerstone in the European Union for Health. This pharmaceutical strategy has four objectives. The first one is to put the patient in the centre of the health policies, giving a big answer to the medical needs. For example, a rare disease we don't have any answer on that paediatric cancer and in the same time, the resistance on antimicrobial. This is the reason why this is strategy puts another objective to invest in the innovation because we want a better access with the best treatments for all the European citizens;

SOUNDBITE (English), Dolors MONTSERRAT (EPP, ES), Rapporteur, The second objective is to promote the sustainability of our public health systems because we have really a big value in Europe that our systems are public and universal, and we are not putting borders to all the European citizens to get in the primary centre curse, to get the hospital and to have the best treatment. So for us, it's very important to promote the sustainability of our public health systems in all 27 of member states and the third objective, but importantly, to strengthen a competitive pharmaceutical industry. We want less dependent industry of third countries out of Europe.

SOUNDBITE (English), Dolors MONTSERRAT (EPP, ES), Rapporteur, We need less burdens, less administrative burdens to help the industry and in order for the patients o have of fast access to the drugs and the medicines.
