The Digital Single Market strategy aims to open up digital opportunities for people and business and enhance Europe's position as a world leader in the digital economy. In this framework, a new legislative package for the modernisation of the EU copyright rules is presented by the Commission in September 2016.

A Digital Single Market (DSM) is one in which the free movement of persons, services and capital is ensured and where the individuals and businesses can seamlessly access and exercise online activities under conditions of fair competition, and a high level of consumer and personal data protection, irrespective of their nationality or place of residence. 
The European Commission has identified the completion of the Digital Single Market (DSM) as one of its 10 political priorities. 
Among its directives, a new directive on copyright in the digital single market. The purpose is to adapt EU copyright legislation to the digital environment, which is quickly changing the way copyright-protected works and content are created, produced, distributed and exploited in the European Union.

The proposed "Directive on copyright in the Digital Single Market" seeks to ensure that creatives and news publishers and journalists benefit from the online world and the internet as they do from the offline world.

n March 2019 MEPs adopted by 348 votes in favour, 274 against and 36 abstentions a new directive on Copyright. This marks the end of the legislative process for the European Parliament that began in 2016. The directive aims to ensure that the longstanding rights and obligations of copyright law also apply to the internet. YouTube, Facebook and Google News are some of the internet household names that will be most directly affected by this legislation. The directive also strives to ensure that the internet remains a space for freedom of expression.

Das Parlament einigte sich auf Zielvorgaben zur Reduzierung der CO2-Emissionen aus dem Straßenverkehr und verabschiedete ein neues Urheberrecht, um zu gewährleisten, dass die Rechte und Verantwortlichkeiten des geistigen Eigentums nun auch im Internet gelten. Die Abgeordneten stimmten zudem über neue Vorschriften für den besseren Schutz von Arbeitnehmern vor krebserregenden Chemikalien, das Verbot von Einweg-Plastik und die Abschaffung der halbjährlichen Zeitumstellung ab.

Das Parlament hat ein neues Urheberrecht für das digitale Zeitalter gebilligt, mit dem sichergestellt wird, dass die Rechte und Verantwortlichkeiten des geistigen Eigentums nun auch im Internet gelten. Kleinere Websites und Einzelpersonen sind teilweise oder vollständig ausgenommen, um das Recht auf Meinungsfreiheit auch online zu schützen.
