Introductory remarks by Antonio TAJANI, EP President, on assassination of journalists and flow in South Europe

SOUNDBITE (English), Antonio TAJANI, EP President, Before we start our work, I would like to express our condolences to the relatives of the victims of the floods in France, Spain and Italy over the last few weeks. I would also like on behalf of the Parliament to extend condolences to the victims of the attacks at the polling stations which led to the death of many people and injured hundreds in Afghanistan. We stand shoulder to shoulder with the Afghan people who had to go through this by just trying to exercise their right to vote. I would like to recall Daphne Caruana Galizia the courageous Maltese journalist who died a year ago.This Parliament will always be in the frontline to defend freedom of the press and journalists who are the expression of that freedom, wherever they are in the world. And this is why we urge there should be a rigorous international investigation to clarify the circumstances of the death of the writer and journalist Jamal Khashoggi and we call upon the Saudi Arabians to find those responsible and punish them for this henious crime. MEPs applaud after the President finishes his speech.
