Commemorations of terrorist attacks in Brussels (22/03/2016) and today's incident in London: Statement by Frans TIMMERMANS, Vice-President of the EC

SOUNDBITE (English), Frans TIMMERMANS, First Vice-President of the EC in charge of Better Regulation, Inter-Institutional Relations, the Rule of Law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, <p>Today we remember those who were hearth, killed, all their loved ones who had to suffer the absence of children, husband, wife, brothers, sisters, and we do remember, not just the horrifying mind of the attacks, we also remind the incredible outpour of solidarity after the attacks. I have to salute this country for not fooling into the traps of the terrorist and not answering hate with hate.</p>

As we know, and as Martin Luther king has said: &ldquo;Hate can never drive out hate, only love can drove out hate&rdquo;.  I think if we honour the memory of those people who died, and who were injured a year ago, we honour them best, by also remembering the help given to the wounded , the outpour of solidarity, the see of flowers we saw in the centre of Brussels, near the Monnaie Sq.

I think an officer was stabbed, and the perpetrator what shoot. So this threat to our society, to our way of life, to our values, hasn&rsquo;t gone, is still there.  But the only response to that is our determination, is the defence or our liberties, is the common acceptance of their values and defending them.
