SOUNDBITE (English), Roberta METSOLA, EP president, <p> I've just emerged from an extremely constructive meeting with the wife of Alexei Navalny, the winner of the 2021 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, together with his chief of staff. They are organizing a global free Navalny campaign, which the European Parliament fully endorses and will support. Discussions were also took place on the need to increase persons that are currently under sanctions list who are responsible for the repression, the unprovoked, illegal and brutal invasion of Ukraine by Putin and the Kremlin. </p>

SOUNDBITE (English), Roberta METSOLA, EP President, <p>That is something that the European Parliament will continue to push back against in a campaign both on the ground politically in terms of solidarity, but also with the laws and decisions that we pass in order to help Ukraine win this war. For us, Russia means Navalny. It means Magnitsky. It means Nemtsov. And these are brave citizens that together with Alexei Navalny's wife, that we will continue to push for, both in their memory and in the current fight for freedom, as is the case of Alexei</p>
