On 24 February 2022 Russia launched an all-out assault on Ukraine. European leaders and the European Parliament condemned this unprovoked and unjustified military aggression in the strongest possible terms, as it grossly violates international law and undermines European and global security. For those who have been forced to flee. For those who have lost relatives and friends. For all those who stand up and fight for what they believe in. I know that the brave people of Ukraine will not give up and neither will we", said Roberta METSOLA, EP President. The nomination singles out Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his bravery, endurance and devotion to his people. It also mentions the role of individuals, representatives of civil society initiatives and state and public institutions.

Roberta METSOLA travels to Kyiv on the invitation of the Chairman of the Ukranian Parliament Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk. During her stay in Kyiv, Metsola meets the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and speaks to the members of the Ukrainian Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada.
